Ian Shaffer is an associate whose practice concentrates on mergers and acquisitions, real estate and commercial financing transactions representing both borrowers and lenders, and general corporate matters.
Prior to joining Gutnicki LLP, Ian Shaffer served as a Senior Associate at MacGregor Associates, where he advised on client product development solutions. Ian also functioned as in-house counsel and assisted in running operations for the firm. Under the leadership of the late John Parsons, MacGregor Associates was a leader in institutional real estate product design and industry research, and provided services to clients including Colony Capital, Inland Institutional Capital, M&G Real Estate and Unico Properties. Ian advised leading institutional real estate investment managers on areas including corporate strategy, competitive positioning, real estate product design, risk management and fee structure development and assessment. Ian’s primary responsibilities included drafting FINRA/SEC compliant broker/dealer contracts with private placement and advisory services clients, as well as master service agreements and statements of work with various global financial service institutions.
Ian acted as project leader on all fund design consulting programs, including open-end fund projects (506(b) and Section 3(c) exemptions) with three of the largest global real estate managers in the world to create or redesign funds, and recommend key terms such as geographical focus, property type, leverage ratio, target returns and target fees to better suit institutional investor preferences and market demand.
Ian graduated from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2015, where he received his Juris Doctorate with a focus in Business Law. During his time in law school, Ian worked as a legal and development intern at Friedman Properties, a predominant real estate development firm in Chicago. He received his undergraduate degree from Indiana University, where he majored in Business Law at the Kelley School of Business.
